THIS IS WHY YOUR BAND ISN’T FAMOUS… YET

The talent that exists in the SoCal music scene is immense.

There are so many independent artists that are creating great music, and continue to evolve in their sound and art. So, what does it take to stand out?

Nowadays, the most prominent artists in the music industry have solid branding, use marketing tactics, and have visuals that can create a universe revolving around their work.

Of course, the true recipe to success is much more convoluted, however, incorporating such elements as a musician or band that aims to grow their audience could prove to be effective.

For branding efforts, The Treedome, a quartet from Los Angeles, have created a feeling throughout the various channels they occupy that is consistent all throughout. There is a certain softness and warmth to their music that they have been able to translate to their website and visuals.

The ability to communicate an emotion or feeling to a mass audience is incredibly impactful, and cultivates loyalty amongst listeners. Recognition amongst an audience can also be garnered through the content shared on social media.

Porkboii is an indie rock band that have a grasp on their audience that is displayed through the engagement they receive from their content on Instagram.

Using short form videos, images, and text, the account @porkboii creates content that is satirical and truly resonates with their audience. Right off the bat, they announce that they are “America’s most profitable band” in the bio. What follows are humorous videos that communicates the group’s character while engaging with users in the scene.

While content shared on social media can create awareness for music artists, the visuals used to represent their music can make someone really stand out.

Marlon Funaki is a musician that has experienced lots of growth in the past few years. His exceptional song writing and vocals already make him a star, but the music video for his song “Metaphor” is an incredibly memorable piece of work.

The colors are warm, and the scenes of Funaki singing the lyrics in an empty meadow evoke a heart sinking feeling. While the song can stand on its own, the pain you see as he strums his guitar shows viewers how he is feeling.

He is alone in all scenes. Sometimes with his guitar, but at times not. Overall, the feeling of sorrow is felt through the screen. “Metaphor” will live on visually and sonically for listeners to replay.

If it was just about the music, everyone would be recognized for what they are able to create. The truth is, those who achieve the most success are able to use various tools such as branding, marketing, and visuals to create a lasting identity around the music.

This may sound difficult, but consistency and authenticity in everything you do is what will capture your audience the most.
